Department
The Department of Chemistry was established in 2018 within the Istanbul University Faculty of Science, the first science faculty in Turkey. The Chemistry department will maintain its education and research activities in four departments: Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry, thanks to its specialist instructor and background open to improvement.
Chemists study matter at the atomic and molecular levels. They try to understand the chemical and physical relationships of substances. Today, technologies developed based on the knowledge produced by the science of chemistry are medicine, food, textile, petroleum, polymer, cleaning, cosmetics, etc. It is present in every aspect of our lives. A chemist who has the necessary training and, thus, the qualifications in the field can produce new materials or develop existing materials with the desired properties and perform the structural characterization of the synthesized substances using a wide variety of analytical and instrumental methods, including chromatography and spectroscopy. The chemists who will graduate from our department will specialize in plastic, medicine, food, petroleum, textile, metal, ceramics, etc. They can work in all industrial areas where chemistry is used. They can work as researchers in the laboratories of public institutions conducting scientific research. They can become occupational safety specialists by obtaining the necessary certificates and becoming teachers by forming pedagogical.
Our primary mission is to raise the research ability and basic knowledge level of the students who graduated by studying chemistry to the highest level, to train researchers at undergraduate and graduate level who are creative and entrepreneurial, who can produce projects and who will contribute to the development of our country by transforming their results into technology. In addition, by catching international standards in education and training, with our research infrastructure and competent teaching staff, we do new research, produce information, and present this information for the benefit of humanity.
Following the historical origin and universal identity of Istanbul University, we act with the vision of being a respected department that makes a name for itself worldwide with the knowledge it produces and the well-equipped individuals it graduates in the field of chemistry.
